To celebrate the arrival of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, we spent the day learning about this vibrant spring festival from Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u30b7\u30f3\u30cf\u30e9\uff06\u30bf\u30df\u30eb\u30fb\u30cb\u30e5\u30fc\u30a4\u30e4\u30fc\u306e\u5230\u6765\u3092\u304a\u795d\u3044\u3059\u308b\u305f\u3081\u306b\u3001\u5148\u9031\u306f\u30b9\u30ea\u30e9\u30f3\u30ab\u306e\u3053\u306e\u8272\u9bae\u3084\u304b\u306a\u6625\u306e\u304a\u796d\u308a\u306b\u3064\u3044\u3066\u5b66\u3073\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of our Kinder class teachers is from Sri Lanka, and she shared many interesting traditions and stories from her culture with the children. When she asked the class if they remembered her home country, everyone excitedly shouted, \u201cSri Lanka!\u201d We then located it on the world map, and when asked whether it was a big or small country, the children thoughtfully replied, \u201cIt\u2019s small, and Japan is big!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children watched a short video introducing the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and their curiosity was sparked right away. They asked many thoughtful questions as we explored the customs and culture of Sri Lanka. Just as Japan has cherry blossoms, we discovered that Sri Lanka has a beautiful red flower called the Erabadu. We also learned about a special bird called the Asian Koel, or Koha. When we looked at its picture, the children observed, \u201cThe bird is black and has red eyes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We learned that the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is celebrated on April 13th and 14th. During this time, families in Sri Lanka decorate their homes, wear new clothes, and enjoy traditional games and food with their loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u3053\u306e\u304a\u796d\u308a\u306f\u30014\u670813\u65e5\u306814\u65e5\u306b\u884c\u308f\u308c\u3001\u30b9\u30ea\u30e9\u30f3\u30ab\u306e\u4eba\u3005\u306f\u5bb6\u3092\u98fe\u3063\u305f\u308a\u3001\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u670d\u3092\u7740\u305f\u308a\u3001\u697d\u3057\u3044\u30b2\u30fc\u30e0\u3092\u3057\u305f\u308a\u3001\u7f8e\u5473\u3057\u3044\u6599\u7406\u3092\u98df\u3079\u305f\u308a\u3057\u3066\u3001\u65b0\u5e74\u3092\u795d\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our main focus today was on the delicious New Year foods of Sri Lanka. Some of the children remembered Kiribath<\/em> (milk rice) from last year, and when shown a picture, they excitedly recognized it. We also talked about Lunumiris<\/em>, the spicy sambal that\u2019s often eaten with Kiribath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, we introduced a few more traditional sweets, each with its own unique shape: \u4eca\u5e74\u306f\u3001\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u4f1d\u7d71\u7684\u306a\u304a\u83d3\u5b50\u306b\u3082\u6ce8\u76ee\u3057\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002\u305d\u308c\u305e\u308c\u9055\u3063\u305f\u5f62\u3092\u3057\u3066\u3044\u3066\u3001\u3068\u3066\u3082\u30e6\u30cb\u30fc\u30af\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children enjoyed sketching these sweets in their sketchbooks and shared thoughtful observations about their shapes. Later, they used clay to model the food items and worked with construction paper to craft Asmi and Kavum in the afternoon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a joyful day of cultural learning, creativity, and hands-on exploration. We are proud to celebrate and learn from the diverse cultures in our classroom, and this experience was a wonderful reminder of the richness that cultural sharing brings to our learning community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
