Our Kinder class revisited the beloved story The Very Hungry Caterpillar<\/em> by Eric Carle. Many children had read this book since their Nursery and Pre-K years, and the moment the cover appeared, they instantly recognized it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We began our lesson with a discussion around the word hungry<\/em>. When asked, \u201cAre you hungry?\u201d most children responded, \u201cNo,\u201d explaining they had already eaten lunch and snacks. This simple conversation paved the way for a deeper inquiry into why we eat and how food provides the energy needed to grow\u2014just like the caterpillar in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Page by page, the children explored the caterpillar\u2019s journey. They reflected on how the tiny caterpillar ate various foods before transforming into a bigger, stronger butterfly. These conversations supported the development of key IB Learner Profile traits such as Thinkers<\/em>, Knowledgeable<\/em>, and Inquirers<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Debate: Can We Eat Leaves?\/\u8449\u3063\u3071\u306f\u98df\u3079\u3089\u308c\u308b\uff1f\u30c7\u30a3\u30d9\u30fc\u30c8<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most exciting moment came when the caterpillar ate a leaf. One child exclaimed, \u201cWe don\u2019t eat leaves!\u201d while another argued, \u201cYes, we can eat leaves!\u201d This sparked curiosity, and the question, \u201cCan we eat leaves?\u201d became the first entry on our new Wonder Wall\u2014a space where children post questions they want to explore in future lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researching Together\/ \u307f\u3093\u306a\u3067\u8abf\u3079\u308b<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To investigate, the class conducted a small survey: 7 out of 10 children said \u201cYes,\u201d while 3 said \u201cNo.\u201d Instead of providing immediate answers, we encouraged research. The children discovered that some leaves, such as lettuce, spinach, and cabbage, are edible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To extend the learning, we visited Tokyu Store in Lalaport to explore the types of leaves available in real-life markets. The children were excited to see various edible leaves and compare them to what they had learned in class. We also explored Japanese foods such as Sakuramochi<\/em>, where some children noted that the leaf is eaten, and Kashiwamochi<\/em>, where most said the leaf is not eaten. The discussion extended to matcha, derived from tea leaves, with many children sharing that they enjoy matcha-flavored ice cream. Finally, the class compared edible leaves to grass, realizing that while people usually don\u2019t eat grass, animals like elephants and buffalo do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by their research and market visit, the children explored books about leaves, observing differences in size, shape, and color. Using their observations, they designed and drew their own unique leaf creations. Each artwork reflected both their imagination and newfound knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
