Discovering Summer Through Familiar Experiences | 身近な体験から夏を探究

Throughout August, our After School children explored the theme of “Summer Season and Summer Fun.”　We began with familiar topics such as summer weather and nature. The children shared what they had noticed and considered how summer differs from other seasons.

8月のアフタースクールでは、「夏の季節と夏の楽しみ」をテーマに探究活動を行いました。まずは、夏の天気や自然など、子どもたちにとって身近な話題からスタートしました。自分たちが気づいたことを伝え合いながら、夏とほかの季節との違いについて考えました。

Summer Holidays and Clothing | 夏休みと夏の服装

The children talked about activities they enjoy during the summer holidays and considered which clothes are comfortable in hot weather.　They then used their ideas to design their own summer outfits. This creative activity encouraged them to connect everyday experiences with new English vocabulary.

夏休みに楽しみたいことについて話し合い、暑い季節を快適に過ごすためには、どのような服装がよいかを考えました。その後、学んだことを生かして、自分だけの夏のコーディネートをデザインしました。身近な生活と新しい英語の言葉を結びつけながら、楽しく表現することができました。

Festivals, Food and Tomato Inquiry | 夏祭りと食べ物、トマトの探究

In the latter part of the month, we explored summer festivals in Japan and around the world, with a special focus on La Tomatina, the famous tomato festival in Spain.　This led to an investigation into how tomatoes grow. The children learned how seeds grow into plants with soil, water and sunlight, before producing flowers and tomatoes.

8月後半には、日本や世界の夏祭りについて学びました。特に、スペインで行われる有名なトマト祭り「ラ・トマティーナ」に注目しました。そこから「トマトはどのように育つのだろう？」という疑問が生まれました。種が土、水、太陽の光によって成長し、花が咲いた後にトマトの実ができることを学びました。

The children also joined the summer festival held at our school and enjoyed participating in the different games. Experiencing a summer festival themselves helped make their learning more meaningful.　We also talked about summer meals, fruits, snacks and refreshing treats. The children enjoyed sharing their favourite summer foods and listening to one another’s ideas.

園で開催された夏祭りにも参加し、さまざまなゲームを楽しみました。実際に夏祭りを体験したことで、探究した内容をより身近に感じることができました。また、夏に食べる料理や果物、おやつ、冷たい食べ物についても話し合いました。自分の好きな夏の食べ物を紹介し、友達の考えにも興味を持って耳を傾けていました。

Developing English Through Inquiry | 探究を通して育む英語力

Alongside our inquiry, the children continued learning with Kid’s Box. They practiced listening, reading, phonics, the simple past tense, irregular verbs, contractions and health-related vocabulary.　By connecting English with meaningful topics, the children were able to use new words while sharing their own experiences and ideas. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow throughout the month.

探究活動とあわせて、Kid’s Boxを使った英語学習にも取り組みました。リスニングやリーディング、フォニックス、過去形、不規則動詞、短縮形、健康に関する語彙などを練習しました。英語を身近なテーマと結びつけることで、新しい言葉を使いながら、自分の経験や考えを伝えることができました。1か月の活動を通して、子どもたちが自信を持って表現する姿が増えたことをうれしく思います。
