Exploring Our Community|A K2 and K3 Inquiry into Kashiwanoha身近な街を探検しよう|K2・K3の柏の葉コミュニティ探究

Children’s Questions Lead the Way | 子どもたちの「なに?」

“What is this?” “What are they doing?”

A walk around our neighbourhood brings so many things to wonder about. Over the past three months, these everyday questions have guided our K2 and K3 class through our “Who We Are” unit of inquiry.

At Beyondia International School Kashiwanoha, we have been exploring familiar places and the community workers who help us. Our starting point was simple: let’s look more closely at the neighbourhood and explore the children’s questions together.

Beyondia International School Kashiwanoha

Familiar Places Become Learning Connections |

After a neighbourhood walk, we gathered to talk about the places we had noticed. LaLaport, the hospital, and the police station were among the places the children mentioned.

Drawing their favourite places gave the children another way to share their interests. We then introduced vocabulary connected to places and community workers, exploring these words through different learning stations.

For our five-year-olds, word searches offered another opportunity to become familiar with the vocabulary.

Building Our Town Through Play |

What happens when familiar places become something we can build?

Using LEGO, blocks, and magnetic tiles, the children created places in the town. Building offered a hands-on way to revisit what they had seen and represent their ideas through play.

Our walks also became opportunities to look again. We searched for the places we had explored in class and noticed the people working there, connecting classroom learning with the community around us.

Creating Kashiwanoha Together |

Our inquiry also grew into a group project: creating the Kashiwanoha-campus area using origami and construction paper.

The children brought their ideas together to represent the neighbourhood they had been exploring. From asking questions on a walk to building a shared creation, familiar surroundings became a starting point for learning together.

We look forward to seeing where their next “What is this?” will take us.
